Service for fallen police officer

Stoke Newington police officer Pc Clifford Fox has been researching the six police officers killed in the line of duty buried at Abney Park. All had a headstone but one, the elusive Pc Lillicrap. Pc Fox has raised money to re-instate a memorial stone. This will be unveiled at a ceremony with Borough Commander Simon Laurence in attendance. The ceremony will be led by Nial Weir from St Paul’s Church.

Pc Lillicrap died of over exertion on August 31 1862, aged 45 years. He collapsed whilst in pursuit of a thief in Petticoat Lane. His funeral procession was attended by over 200 officers from his divisions and 6 Superintendents. Pc Lillicrap had been on the force for 14 years at the time of his demise, and his funeral was noted as ‘a true test of the appreciation in which he was held’.

Pc Fox has spent months researching the six police officers killed in the line of duty buried at Abney Park. He has searched press clippings and various archives to uncover their stories, and through this has written a book to help their memories live on.
