One Jazz presents Afternoon jazz in the Chapel - Alina Bzhezhinska and Denys Baptiste play the music of Alice Coltrane

  • Abney Park Trust Stoke Newington High Street London, England, N16 0LH United Kingdom (map)

Alice Coltrane is the most influential harp player in the history of jazz music. Alongside a mastery of her instrument she was a gifted composer, band leader and spiritual leader. Although her music has, to some extent, lived in the shadow of her husband John Coltrane’s peerless recordings her popularity and influence have grown greatly in recent years.

Ukrainian born Alina Bzhezhinska is one the world’s greatest modern harp players. Trained in classical music and jazz she has made it her mission to keep Alice Coltrane’s music alive. Denys Baptiste is one of the most revered saxophonists of his generation and as well as leading his own bands has played with everyone from Jerry Dammers and Courtney Pine to McCoy Tyner and Andrew Hill. He’s also a student of the music of John and Alice Coltrane.

In this first ever jazz concert in the restored Abney Park Chapel Alina and Denys will play Alice Coltrane’s glorious compositions, and their own music inspired by the Coltranes, in an intimate and beautiful setting befitting of their legacy.

The event is presented by the soon to be launched new jazz radio station One Jazz, in partnership with Abney Park Trust. The ground floor of the Chapel is fully accessible, with accessible facilities. The gallery seats have a great view and acoustic but please note that they can only be reached by a steep, narrow spiral staircase.
